Vajrapani, known in Tibetan as Chana Dorje, is the powerful bodhisattva who embodies the enlightened energy of all Buddhas' power and protection. As the "Lord of Secrets," he holds the secret tantric teachings and serves as the chief protector of the Buddha, manifesting fierce compassion to overcome obstacles and subdue negative forces. Together with Manjushri (wisdom) and Avalokiteshvara (compassion), he forms the powerful triad of protectors known as the "Three Families of Tibet."

Standing in dynamic alidha posture—the warrior stance—with his right leg bent and left leg extended, he tramples upon negative forces beneath his feet, symbolizing complete victory over all hindrances on the spiritual path. His right hand holds a five-pronged vajra (dorje) raised high, representing the indestructible power of enlightened mind that penetrates all obscurations. His left hand displays the threatening mudra (tarjani gesture) at his heart, warding away evil and negativity. A visvajra rests at his hip, secured by a tiger skin loincloth that demonstrates his power to tame even the fiercest obstacles.

Every element of this hand-carved sculpture reflects the fine craftsmanship specified. His fierce expression embodies compassionate wrath—three blazing eyes that see throughout all realms, bared fangs expressing his determination to protect, and eyebrows knit in a frown that terrifies negativity while his heart remains filled with love for beings. His hair rises upward like flames, representing the transformative fire of enlightened activity.

The hand-painted finish brings this powerful protector to life with traditional mineral pigments. His blue-black body represents the unchanging, indestructible nature of enlightened mind. The vajra is highlighted with precision, its five prongs symbolizing the five wisdoms. The tiger skin is rendered in warm orange tones with black stripes, while the flames of his aureole dance in vibrant reds and golds.

He wears the full regalia of a wrathful protector—the five-skull crown adorning his head represents the transformation of the five poisons into the five wisdoms. A garland of fifty severed heads hangs across his body, symbolizing the purification of all verbal and mental obscurations. Serpents coil as sacred ornaments around his limbs, representing his mastery over the naga spirits and his power to control the life force.

For more than a millennium, the Kathmandu Valley has nurtured a living lineage of metal sculptors who have preserved the secrets of ancient lost-wax creation. Each piece is individually hand-carved, bearing the subtle variations that prove its authenticity—a transmission of living artistic heritage and the fierce, protective presence of the Lord of Secrets who stands ready to guard all beings on the path.
