Machig Labdron (1055–1153) is the founder of the Chöd tradition, a revered female master and wisdom dakini in Tibetan Buddhism. She is considered an emanation of Prajnaparamita, the Great Mother of Wisdom.

She stands in dancing posture, her white body representing pure, luminous wisdom. In her right hand, she holds a damaru (hand drum), symbolizing the sound of Dharma that awakens beings. In her left hand, she holds a bell, representing wisdom and the recognition of emptiness. Her three eyes perceive all realms with awakened awareness.

The hand-painted finish employs traditional mineral pigments. Her white body is applied in layers to create depth and luminosity. Select gold-gilding accents highlight her crown, jewelry, damaru, and bell, creating a refined contrast against the white surface.

She wears the five-skull crown, representing the transformation of the five poisons into the five wisdoms. Bone ornaments adorn her form—necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and anklets—all carved with meticulous attention. Her hair flows upward like flames, symbolizing the transformative fire of enlightened wisdom.

According to tradition, Machig Labdron's Chöd practice is known as "cutting through" attachment to self and overcoming fear through the offering of one's body. Her teachings spread throughout Tibet and India, establishing her as one of the most influential female masters in Buddhist history.

The ancient technique used in crafting this piece follows time-honored methods preserved in the Kathmandu Valley for centuries. The lost-wax process, detailed hand-chasing, and careful application of mineral pigments and gilding have been executed with skill by an experienced artisan.

For more than a millennium, the Kathmandu Valley has nurtured a living lineage of metal sculptors. This 40cm Machig Labdron masterwork represents that living heritage—a refined expression of the great female master's wisdom and compassion.
